The Wilvo Yamaha MXGP outfit had an appointment in the United Kingdom this past weekend, as the prestigious Motocross of Nations took place at Matterley Basin. Arnaud Tonus was selected to represent Team Switzerland at the race, which attracted 72,000 fans, and was eager to help his nation acquire a noteworthy result.
Conditions were optimal on Saturday and Arnaud Tonus thrived. Tonus, who ran ‘16’ rather than his usual number, was in contention for a spot inside of the top five in both practice and the qualifying heat, but he eventually secured eighth in his heat. That result was used to help Switzerland secure the sixth gate pick for the following day.
The races were not held in pleasant conditions, unfortunately, after rain battered the circuit overnight and made it particularly challenging. Tonus used his effortless style to master the mud in the first of two motos though, as he ran comfortably inside of the top five for the duration of the race and eventually crossed the line in fifth. The second moto was a difficult affair for Tonus, as a mistake restricted him to tenth at the chequered flag. That result, however, still gave him fifth overall in the MXGP category.
Arnaud Tonus had the best finish on Team Switzerland, so contributed a lot to their final ranking. The Swiss were fifth when the results were tallied up and just three points down on Team Belgium in fourth. Wilvo Yamaha MXGP will now turn their attention to the new season, following a successful term in MXGP that included one Grand Prix win with Shaun Simpson in Indonesia.
Arnaud Tonus: “It was a bit of a frustrating day. I felt good, but I made a few mistakes so I felt like I could have done better. The track was really difficult today and I think I was fifth so that is okay. I hope to keep improving and land on the podium soon.”
