The Wilvo Yamaha MXGP squad tackled the eleventh round of the FIM Motocross World Championship, the Grand Prix of Lombardia, this past weekend. Intense temperatures ensured that it would be a taxing event and one where only the best riders would thrive. Jeremy Seewer did exactly that on Italian soil.
It was quite clear that Jeremy Seewer had the speed to contend on Saturday morning, as he posted many competitive times in the practice sessions and had momentum on his side going into the qualifying race. Seewer then put that to good use in that twenty-minute moto, as he used the power within his YZ450F to rocket out of the gate and claim the holeshot in front of 30,000 fans. After leading four complete laps, he settled into second and secured that position at the chequered flag.
Jeremy Seewer did not get quite as good a start in the first moto on Sunday, which took place beneath the beating sun, and ended the opening lap in eleventh. Using that same speed that took him to such a terrific result on the first day, Seewer dropped the hammer immediately and started to tear past those ahead of him. Eighth was the position that he secured at the chequered flag, following a strong showing, but it was quite clear that he was capable of pushing those inside of the top five. Hopes were high entering the second and final encounter of the weekend.
Another spectacular performance from Jeremy Seewer in the second moto gripped fans from across the globe, as he ended the first lap in twelfth and pushed all the way up to fifth at the chequered flag! There were just three measly seconds between him and the rider in fourth at the end as well. Sixth overall was where he ended up in the overall classification, following those great races, and the points gained helped him edge closer to the rider who is seventh in the championship.
Shaun Simpson got things off to a solid start in the qualifying race on Saturday, as he secured thirteenth and a positive spot on the starting line for the races. The first moto did not go quite to plan, however, as an incident early on forced him to withdraw. More misfortune in the second race robbed him of a decent finish, so he is hungry for redemption at the next round in Indonesia. Remember, Simpson won that event a year ago and will thrive off of that when the twelfth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship fires into life.
Jeremy Seewer: “I felt amazing from the first practice here. I made some small changes to the bike, but it was really good all weekend and I am really happy with that. I am also pumped with my holeshot yesterday and to finish second in the qualifying race as well. For some reason, I feel like I had good rhythm this weekend and my bike felt the best it has all year. It keeps getting better and better, plus I managed to take another step with the top-five finish, my first of the season, and it helps me to build my confidence. I just want to thank my whole team; they put a lot of effort into it. Now I’m looking forward to the trip overseas.”
Shaun Simpson: “There were some positives, mainly yesterday. I felt like we were just starting to get the train rolling, after both Matterley [Basin] and France last week, then this week had all of the ingredients to be a success. I have been putting in quite a bit of time on the test track and winding it up a bit, but it just did not work out this weekend. Yesterday was okay though, lap times and stuff were better than they have been, but from there the scorecard speaks for itself. Back to the drawing board.”
