Wilvo Yamaha MXGP experienced an enjoyable weekend at the fifteenth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship, Lommel, as Jeremy Seewer and Shaun Simpson recorded solid results in front of many partners and friends of the team. The Grand Prix of Belgium is arguably the hardest race on the schedule and one where the toughest riders shine through.
Proceedings were kicked off in a positive manner in the qualifying race on Saturday, as both riders saved energy for the two longer races and still acquired some solid positions on the starting line. Shaun Simpson reached the chequered flag in eighth, with Jeremy Seewer hot on his heels in ninth. It was the latter who came out on top in the first moto on Sunday though. Seewer started near the head of the field in sixth and never gave up, despite the taxing conditions, so managed to gain a position and reach the chequered flag in fifth. It was his first top-five finish since the second moto at the Grand Prix of Asia last month.
Jeremy Seewer had a fairly similar outing in the second and final encounter, as he completed the first lap in seventh and then clawed his way up to sixth at the chequered flag. It was another consistent ride and one that left him in sixth overall on the day as well. Thanks to the thirty-one points that were acquired at the Belgian round, Seewer has cemented his spot in the championship standings. Eighth is the position that he occupies heading into his home event at Frauenfeld-Gachnang in two weeks.
The results that Shaun Simpson acquired on race day do not truly represent how well he rode. A fall on the opening lap of the first moto left him with a considerable amount of work to do. Most would have opted to pull in and save energy, but Simpson put his head down and put on an incredible charge that left him in eleventh at the chequered flag. The same position was occupied in the final moto and that left him in tenth overall on the day.
Following a gruelling weekend beneath the beating sun, Wilvo Yamaha MXGP will take advantage of a weekend off before heading to the Grand Prix of Switzerland, presented by iXS, in the middle of August.
Jeremy Seewer: “I have had my best results on the sand this year, but I am usually a hard-pack rider. I went fifth and sixth, for sixth overall, and I just wanted to do a top five. I am happy with the rest though. There were no mistakes, no crashes and no moments. I was just solid. My fitness felt really great actually, so that was good.”
Shaun Simpson: “Things were looking so good this weekend, but I tried a different line in the first race and landed in soft spot and went over the ‘bars. Mentally I felt ready for this race, but physically… I spent too much energy in the first race and from halfway in the second moto I was completely empty. I am quite frustrated with the result of this weekend, twice outside the top ten when I feel I should have been inside the top seven. I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and if I had to do it all again tomorrow, I would.”
