Just a handful of days on from the first event at Lommel, the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP squad returned to the bottomless sand for round fourteen of the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship. Rain threatened to make the event even trickier, but clear skies prevailed just in time for the first premier-class moto at midday. The Grand Prix of Limburg was, of course, run behind closed doors.

Jeremy Seewer had an eventful time of it at the Grand Prix of Flanders, yet it was quite evident that he had the speed to contend in the soft stuff. That speed was again clear at Wednesday’s race and put to good use in the first moto – he started in fourth and pushed the leaders throughout. Consistency was pivotal and he was one of the few to avoid major mistakes in the treacherous conditions, so he reached the chequered flag in fourth and put solid points on the board. That result set him up well to achieve a good overall ranking too.

The second moto started in a similar fashion for Seewer, as he completed the first lap in fourth and had his sights set on the race leaders. A minor mistake caused him to fall to sixth early on and from there he fought on the cusp of the top five for the duration, before hitting the chequered flag in seventh. That 4-7 scorecard left him in fifth overall on the day. Seewer is now fourth in the premier-class championship standings. Four rounds remain.

Gautier Paulin was sidelined by a freak technical problem in the first moto but rebounded well to fight for a spot inside of the top five in moto two. After starting in ninth, he moved into sixth at the chequered flag. That left him in twelfth overall on the day and also helped him close in on a top-six ranking in the standings. Arnaud Tonus, the third rider under the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP tent, gained valuable seat time after missing time with a mild concussion and scored points in each moto.

The final round in Belgium, the Grand Prix of Lommel, is next on the agenda for the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP outfit. Round fifteen of the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship will be run on Sunday.

Jeremy Seewer: “Even though it rained quite a bit this morning, the track had quite a bit of flow. They made some changes that took a lot of little obstacles away. I felt better on the track this morning, I had quite a decent first moto and two good starts. I battled for third in the first race but decided to settle for fourth and go for the second race. This strategy did not work at all, because I made some bike changes between races and went completely the wrong way. I struggled with that, then I could not find my flow and I felt empty in terms of energy. The season is getting long, so it’s getting really tough to stay mentally and physically 100%. I gave it my all. I can’t blame myself and now up to the last one on Sunday.”

Gautier Paulin: “It was not the day I wanted. I had a freak issue in the first moto, which cost me. I was flowing in the second moto and finished sixth. A bad start hurt me, but the speed was there. A few mistakes cost me a good result. I will be ready for Lommel 3. Even today, I still had some energy to push and that was really good. I pushed really hard and am feeling good.”

Arnaud Tonus: “It was really a struggle today. In both motos I had some bad starts and crashes. It was super hard. I definitely felt like I was not physically ready for the demands of this event here in Lommel, especially two GPs in a row here. It was a really difficult day, so now I need to try to recover as best I can.”
